I have been interested in railways from an early age. At 4 years of age I was found wandering by the trackside trying to put my little wooden locomotive on the track.
I started work on the railway at Easter 1960 as a junior porter. As I was always interested in steam I transferred to Lancaster Green Ayre shed in 1961. This move allowed me to travel on my days off and holidays all over the country to take photographs and watch trains.
Scotland was my favourite place for photographing railways and I had many happy holidays there. Towards the end of steam in 1968, I would exchange turns in order to work on steam.
In 1971 I was asked if I would go back on steam working specials all over the north, working out of Stranraer, Glasgow, Edinburgh and also around Carnforth. This was an enjoyable time for me. I retired from the railways in 2003.
