Jim Flint & Jim Harbart’s interest in railways began in 1938 when they were school boys becoming good friends and keen train spotters. After the war, both of them began to take an interest in photographing railways using Kodak cameras with Jim Flint taking 4.5cm negatives and Jim Harbart 6x9cm negatives.
On leaving school, Jim Harbart pursued a career in business while Jim Flint became an apprentice at Crewe Works. Jim Flint went on to become Shedmaster at Stafford MPD, Assistant District Motive Power Superintendent at Kentish Town before settling in to a management role at Euston House and finally Marylebone HQ.
In 1948 the 2 friends began making their photographs available to fellow enthusiasts and went on to produce lists in 1959 of their images.
They advertised their printing service through the RCTS Observer and the SLS Journal. Their prices at the time were 8d for postcards or 7/6d per dozen or 28/- for 4 dozen. Whole plates were 2/6d each and postage was extra on orders under 12 cards.
Jim Flint now lives in Woking and Jim Harbart in Berkhamsted and we are grateful to them for choosing The Transport Treasury to care for their collection.
We have taken the original lists and enhanced them by adding additional views as well as providing dates where known as the latter were omitted from the original lists.
